2. to render (ethyl alcohol) unfit to drink by adding in
toxic or unpalatable substances (such as benzene or
pyridine) which nevertherless permit alcohol to be used as
a solvent.
[PJC]

3. modify the tertiary structure of (a protein or nucleic
acid) so as to reduce or destroy its characteristic
biological activity.

Note: Bioactive macromolecules such as enzymes or DNA may be
denatured by heat, acid, alkali, or solvent treatment;
the extent of such treatment required to denature a
molecule varies with the specific compound. In some
cases the denatured molecules may regain their original
properties (renature) by other treatments. Denaturation
may also cause a change in the physical properties of
such molecules, e.g. proteins may become insoluble in
water.

  • Ascitic Fluid Analysis in the Differential Diagnosis of Ascites: Focus . . .
Non-biochemical tests of ascitic fluid, including cell counts, bacterial culture, and PCR, play an important role in diagnosing the cause of ascites, especially in infectious ascites
  • Peritoneal Fluid Analysis • LITFL • CCC Investigations
The peritoneum is a tough semi-permeable membrane lining abdominal and visceral cavities it encloses, supports and lubricates organs within the cavity Paracentesis is effectively the analysis of 'Ascites' - the abnormal accumulation of fluid within the abdomen
  • Peritoneal fluid - eClinpath
If the rupture is large, the fluid would be very similar to urine (with fairly low cell counts and total protein) immediately after the rupture However, similar to biliary rupture, the free urine will then elicit an inflammatory response causing an exudative effusion
  • Body Fluid Panel - Clinlab Navigator
Effusions may be classified as transudates or exudates Transudates are usually bilateral and arise from either increased capillary hydrostatic pressure or decreased oncotic pressure secondary to congestive heart failure, fluid overload, cirrhosis, or hypoalbuminemia
  • Peritoneal Fluid Test Procedure: What You Need to Know
Cell count: A cell count is performed to determine the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and other cells present in the fluid Microscopic examination: The fluid is examined under a microscope to check for the presence of abnormal cells or other substances
  • 10: Pleural, Pericardial, and Peritoneal Fluid Analysis
The microscopic examination of pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal fluids may include a total cell count of erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBCs) and leukocytes (white blood cells, WBCs), a nucleated cell differential count, cytology studies, and, at times, identification of crystals
  • Body fluid cell counts – how to perform and interpret the resul
Physiologically, the volume of peritoneal fluid is small The term ‘ascites’ refers to an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the perito-neal cavity, and the fluid is commonly referred to as ‘ascitic fluid’ rather than ‘peritoneal fluid’
  • What is the interpretation of a peritoneal fluid analysis showing an . . .
Primary Interpretation: This is NOT spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and the lymphocyte-predominant pattern strongly suggests tuberculous peritonitis or peritoneal carcinomatosis requiring further diagnostic workup
  • Evaluation of adults with ascites - UpToDate
Accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity results in ascites In the United States, ascites is most often due to portal hypertension resulting from cirrhosis
  • Cell count, Peritoneal Fluid Ascites Fluid Reference Ranges - MU . . .
A neutrophil count of >250 cell uL is quite sensitive for the diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis A reference RBC count is not well established in the literature
